For over120 years, Merchants' Credit Guide Co. has served the business and the health care communities, providing effective, professional accounts receivable solutions. Founded in 1896 in the heart of the Chicago financial district, where it remains to this day, MCG is a family owned and operated business that offers security, reliability, and performance virtually unmatched in the accounts receivable industry.
In 1896 the accounts receivable industry looked distinctly different than it does today. Our company founder, Hervey H Dorr, saw a need and set out to provide a solution. Although the extension of credit directly to the consumer was rare, business to business credit lines were common. The credit bureaus did not exist and businesses needed a way to make better lending decisions.
If only a publication existed that could give merchants and their credit managers guidance in their credit making decisions! Such a reference book would be of great value to so many. And thus the "Merchants' Credit Guide" was born. It was a subscription publication that compiled data from merchants coast to coast regarding the credit history of those utilizing lines of credit and making that information available to all subscribing merchants. The name was on the guide's cover and became the name of the company. Hervey also developed "The Dorr System", a series of customizable letters that could be sent to those with delinquent accounts that would, to quote from the original documents, "get the money without a word from you to the delinquent debtor, thereby leaving no cause for offense."
Hervey's health declined suddenly and Royal Victor Burtis, Hervey's son-in-law, assumed leadership of the company. The tenth of ten children, RV took the ball and ran with it. With vigilant focus and a winning personality Merchants' Credit Guide continued growing and serving its clients. The years of WWII were hard on everyone but MCG remained steadfast and true to their mission of delinquent account resolution for merchants.
The only thing constant is change. In the 1950's the most notable change in the accounts receivable industry was the rapid growth of consumer credit. With the good comes the bad. Consumers now could more readily access some goods and services previously unattainable. However, as has been the case since the beginning of time, some who chose to use a line of credit either could not or would not pay their debts in a timely manner. RV was able to apply "The Dorr System" to the consumer market. The task of addressing someone regarding a delinquent account can be a touchy matter. And being able to do so in an inoffensive way always has been, and still is, important for MCG. The Dorr System effectively addressed the challenge, many times outproducing projected results in recovery of delinquent accounts.
Over the past few decades one of the biggest areas of need in the accounts receivable industry has developed in the healthcare arena. More and more responsibility of paying for healthcare is being directed at the consumer. This has created large amounts of outstanding debt for uncompensated care performed at hospitals and other provider facilities across the country. MCG took the forefront again becoming a recognized leader among those providing collections services to healthcare providers. Currently over 80% of MCG's clients come from the healthcare sector.
MCG continues to be a leader in the accounts receivable industry as it has been for over 120 years. Clients and consumers have weighed in with testimonials declaring the exceptional work of MCG and recognizing their superior value based on results and conduct. MCG has developed a rich history of compassion, exemplary performance and forward-thinking innovation which is now woven deeply into the fiber of the company as it stands today.
MCG is firmly established as an example of how the business of collections should be conducted and will continue to embrace their role to lead into the future. Serving clients nationwide, recovering revenue in an honest, ethical and compassionate manner and finding new ways to provide needed services, whatever changes may come, will always be the focus of MCG.
"We wish to express our opinion on your system now in use in our Credit Department as being the best system for bringing results...We did not at first believe (it) would bring the results you claimed, but... (it) not only proved what you claimed, but more. We would recommend your system to anyone desiring a good system..."
